Production and collection of food stuffs, which includes hunting, fishing and wild crafting, is where the food system begins. Much of our food is grown by farmers who are part of a broader agricultural sector that also encompasses the businesses that supply the necessary resources to grow the food (i.e. seeds, fertilizers, farm equipment, animal feed, and farm buildings). Production is not limited to commercial agriculture and fishery. In many areas of the country, members of the non-farm community garden, keep livestock, fish and hunt. There has also been resurgence in urban agriculture as green areas of cities are viewed as potential growing sites and citizens look to backyard livestock to supplement their diets with fresh eggs, milk and meat.
